APACCCEEC team congratulates all citizens and residents of Serbia on the country’s national holiday.

Sretenje — Dan Državnosti Srbije (Sretenje — Day of Serbian Statehood) is Serbia’s national holiday. The holiday commemorates the First Serbian Uprising of 1804, when the struggle for liberation from Ottoman rule began in the village of Orašac, followed by the proclamation of the first Serbian constitution at the Sretenje Assembly in Kragujevac in 1835. This event marked the beginning of the modern Serbian statehood.

Sretenje is also a church holiday and is of great importance to Serbian folk tradition, as it is considered the day when winter encounters the upcoming summer. It is a turning point when the days become noticeably longer and the nights shorter, and it is the moment when winter “turns around” (comes to an end). That is why it is often called “Sretenje obretenje” – from the verb “obrtati” – to turn around.

Serbia’s national holiday is traditionally celebrated on February 15 and 16.
