Today, the 1st of February, marks the start of the Year of the Water Tiger, according to the Chinese Lunar calendar. Today is also the last day of the Year of the Steel Ox. The Chinese traditional zodiac represents a cycle of 12 years, each of which is assigned an animal. The tiger is seen as a symbol of courage, justice, prowess, and strength in the culture of the Chinese people.
The Spring Festival (春节), another name for the Chinese new year, is the most significant traditional holiday for the Chinese people. It is celebrated between the end of January and the middle of February of each year when the first new moon occurs. This day is linked to many traditions in China, however, the most important one is the family reunion. This is the major reason why the transportation network, including flights, trains, and buses, is overwhelmed in the days before the festivities as millions of people start their journey home.
Chinese believe that the whole year is determined by its beginning and, thus, it is of utmost importance that people speak and think only of harmony and good fortune, and deal in good faith.
The fireworks are an irreplaceable part of the celebrations as they are used to expel evil spirits. The Chinese new year lasts until the 15th day of the lunar calendar when the Lantern Festival (元宵节) starts.
