October 1 is the National Day of China – the day of the proclamation of the republic in 1949. From October 1, 2020, the Chinese are on 7-day leave, and seven days off they have since 2000 on the occasion of International Labor Day – May 1, Chinese National Day – October 1 and Chinese New Year – Spring Festival. During the holidays, the tourists in the country are reaching 200 million, which means trips to relatives and gatherings in public places with huge flows of people. The authorities were always there, taking the necessary measures to ensure the safety of citizens during the holiday. For the first time, China will celebrate its national holiday during a pandemic.

On the occasion of the 71st anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Embassy of China in Bulgaria invites compatriots and friends to an online party on its Facebook page from 7 pm on October 1 to celebrate together the National Holiday of China and the sincere Chinese-Bulgarian friendship. Thirty of the online guests who turn out to be the lucky ones, will receive holiday souvenirs.

On the occasion of the 71st anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese Embassy in Bulgaria is organizing an essay competition on “Me and China” (我与中国). Participants share stories related to China, their experiences in the Celestial Empire, events in their Chinese language learning, experiences in communicating with Chinese people, impressions from watching Chinese movies and cultural events. The names of the winners of the competition are expected to be announced during the online party on October 1.

On the 15th day of the eighth month of the Lunar calendar, when the moon is full and its light is brightest during the year, the Chinese people traditionally celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. This year it falls on October 1. Lunar, or the holiday of the close-knit family, is the second most important holiday event after the Chinese New Year and is celebrated by Chinese communities around the world because it is part of the ancient culture of the largest ethnic group in the country – the Han.

On this holiday moon cakes are served – a small round cake, about 10 cm in diameter, with a rich and dense filling. The moon cake is often offered as an exquisite gift to relatives and business partners. Chinese symbols of longevity or harmony appear on the traditional desserts. There are also moon, flowers, vines, rabbit (symbol of the moon). The filling is often made of beans, lotus seed paste, nuts, green tea, salty egg yolks, fruits or dried sliced beef.
